JUNE 2009 NEWS

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

www.bruisedfruitpromotions.com

Hello again, it's your friendly neighbourhood promoter dropping by to keep you informed about what's hot and what's not.
In the news this month - festival fever, BF recruitment, gigs gigs gigs and a lot of good work for charidee.

First off, Bruised Fruit towers have moved offices! And I know what you're thinking, "Surely not again?!" But yes! Big thanks to our pals at Apache for temporarily housing us over the past few months. We've haven't moved far, just around the corner to Adelaide Street behind one of our favourite venues, The Limelight.

We, along with some old friends, have taken over the third floor of the beautiful Marquis Building which was once home to a tailoring factory (and illegal casino!). Our new neighbours include No More Art, Penny Distribution, Crafty Devil and Ossia Music School, with a few more due to move in soon.  There is still space available for other businesses interested so get in touch if you're looking for affordable office/studio rental in Belfast City Centre.
And please can you update your databases, contacts and Christmas card lists with our new address:

So what does June hold in store for BF? We have our last UITA of the season on Tuesday 23rd June in Auntie Annie's which features The Randals, Stereo War Favourites and The South Pole. It's our last show until September, so come on down and don't forget to pick up a copy of our latest CD while you're at it.  UITA Vol 8 was released last month at the 80th UITA and features exclusive tracks from Yes Cadets, Strait Laces, Sparks Fly and Albrechts Pencil.

You may wonder why on earth we stop our regular gigs over the summer months, and the simple reason is, we get FESTIVAL FEVER! Thankfully it's a treatable condition, cured only by getting to as many local festivals as we possibly can!  Here's our pick of the great and the good:

Sat 27th June // Willowstone Festival // Tickets £26 / £32 (camping)
Delamont Country Park, Killyleagh
Feat. Republic of Loose, Ed Zealous, Panama Kings, NI Soul Troop and more

4th July - 31st July // trans // Tickets various prices, many free events
Various locations throughout Belfast
Feat. Massive Attack, Simian Mobile Disco, Danananananakyroyd, FM Belfast and more

Sat 25th July // Glasgowbury // Tickets £25 / £30 (camping)
Eagles Rock, Draperstown
Feat. In Case of Fire, ASIWYFA, Fighting With Wire, LaFaro, Yes Cadets and more

7th - 9th August // Forfey Festival // Tickets £25
Forfey Farm, Lisnaskea
Feat. The Lowly Knights, Six Star Hotel, Not Squares, Adebisi Shank and more

We are currently recruiting for volunteers to work at Willowstone and trans festivals, so if you're interested email volunteers@bruisedfruitpromotions.com for more info.

As you probably know already, Bruised Fruit is a social enterprise which means we sit in the lovely world between charities and commercial companies.  We rely on a lot of support from volunteers and funders and so when someone really makes an effort to give back, we try and repay the favour when we can. For Lesley Adams, that time is now!
Last September Lesley (a past volunteer at BF) ran a 10k race and collected sponsorship to help raise money for Bruised Fruit. She did an amazing job and we were all very proud of her :)

So now it's our (and your) turn to help her! Bruised Fruit are hosting another 'Really Hard Music Quiz' to help raise money for Lesley, who is travelling to Cape Town this November to work with the Niall Mellon Township Trust.  They're a great charity, established in 2002 with the aim of providing quality social housing for the impoverished communities in the townships of South Africa.  Lesley is aiming to raise 5000euro for the trip.
How can you help? By donating online here:

Or by coming along to The Really Hard Music Quiz on Tuesday 30th June in Auntie Annie's.  This is the 3rd quiz we've done and am appalled to admit that the questions are getting easier each time.  It seems people don't know as much as they think they do!  We'll be bringing back the hilarious 'Club Singer' round and will have a brand new maverick round.  Previous months we've asked you to name

i) the 10 things that Right Said Fred were too sexy for
ii) the people that Madonna mentions in Vogue (max of 24 points)

Answers on a postcard to:

Doors for the quiz open at 9pm, we'll be aiming to kick off the questions about 9.30pm. Suggested door  donation £3 but every little helps!

Bruised Fruit are recruiting!
With the new office we've decided to open up to some new people/ideas and we are currently recruiting for new board members.  The Board is currently made up of:

Jennie McCullough
Angie O'Reilly
Rene Fusco
Rocky O'Reilly
David Sinton
John Lawson

We have 2/3 places available for anyone with an interest in music and the arts. Previous board experience is preferred but not essential.  We would expect a commitment of 1 day per month on a voluntary basis.
If this is something that appeals to you or you would like to get some more information on the post please email
jen@bruisedfruitpromotions.com

That's your lot for now folks. See you in July!
